Frequently asked questions

Understanding Oestrogel® (estradiol 0.06% w/w)

Is Oestrogel a body-identical hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

Oestrogel contains 17B-estradiol, which is identical in molecular structure to the estradiol women make naturally in their bodies.2

In which cases is a progestogen also necessary for the patient?

The addition of a progestogen is typically required for at least 12 days per month/28 day cycle or continuous combined oestrogen-progestogen therapy in non- hysterectomised women prevents the excess risk of endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma associated with oestrogen-only HRT.3

Do the different bottles contain the same formulation?

Yes, the bottle shape is different, but the formulation is the same.

How to apply

Is it important to rub in Oestrogel until it feels fully dry on the skin?

There is no need to rub the gel in, simply spread the gel with one movement on either the outer arm, shoulder or mid-inner thigh. Leave to dry for 5 minutes before covering with clothes.4

After applying, how long does the patient need to wait before they can shower?3

Do not shower for at least one hour after application.

After applying Oestrogel, how long should a patient wait before using skincare products on the same area of skin?

Do not use skincare products on the area where the gel has been applied for at least one hour after application.

How long after swimming can a patient apply the gel?

After swimming, the patient should make sure hands and the skin where applying the gel are completely dry before application.

Additional safety warnings and appropriate use

Do not apply to damaged skin. This product is flammable until dry.

What should a patient do if they suspect they have accidentally transferred the gel to a child?

Oestrogel can be accidentally transferred from the skin to others. Do not allow others, especially children, to come into contact with the exposed area of skin and cover the area after the gel has dried. If estradiol is accidentally transferred, young children may show signs of puberty that are not expected (for example breast budding). In most cases the symptoms will disappear when children are no longer exposed to Oestrogel. If a man or child comes in contact with the area of the skin where Oestrogel was applied, wash the affected area of skin with soap and water as soon as possible. The recommendation is to always speak with the patient’s doctor or pharmacist if concerned.3

Is Oestrogel still effective decanted into another container?

To ensure the dose is effective and accurate it should be used directly after it has been pumped from the bottle. If decanted into another container, there is risk of not knowing the correct dose.3 The recommendation would be to always use Oestrogel exactly as the doctor recommended and in accordance with the package leaflet.
